Multiverse Me is Enough

Contributing to a weekend writing prompt and it seems like my only way to respond is through a fictional narrative.

She got home late. It was a full day of meetings, a press con, and a dinner with her publisher. They discussed her book on the science of interior architecture: Neuro-Indezin. It’s past midnight but her day isn’t done yet. She lounged on the L-shaped sofa and settled her glass of red on the end table. She opened her laptop, typed in a formula, and a stream of data about interior designer Em Dee appeared on her screen. She looked at Em and wondered when will their universe collaborate with the rest of the multiverse. Or will it ever. They don’t even have a clue.

She learns that Em is a freelance interior designer. She delves into her past clients and her past design projects. As she reads through Em’s time-series data, she is looking at her, not as a designer but as another ‘her’ with similar tendencies but who also made a string of entirely different choices:

Instead of becoming a design scientist, she is a designer who studies psychology as a hobby.

Instead of living alone, she lives with her partner and stays at her parents’ place when her girlfriend travels for work.

Instead of a high-paying, high-profile career, she struggles to make ends meet so she doesn’t have to work for someone.

A few years ago, she also had to choose among those options that this Em had.

She imagined what her life would be like had she made the same choices herself. It’s not easy to look at a mirror image of yourself and see what could’ve been your life. It can mess up your head sometimes. That’s why most people don’t often explore the multiverse archive.

For a second, she thought that Em looked unhappy. But there is a gradation of hues emanating around her, ranging from sky blue, teal, to deep blue and a sliver of deep violet covering all the layered blues. Em will get to that absolute state soon, she thought.
