Let Them Tell You No

As a recent college graduate who has a job teaching English in Spain, I am probably the poster child for avoiding the real world.

However, I recently decided to start applying for jobs back in the United States because I’d like to be close to my boyfriend, family, and friends. Although I hope to work abroad eventually, now is not the time. So I reached out to a good friend making it big in the public health industry — somewhere I see myself down the line. And when I asked about where I should apply or if my lack of experience could pigeonhole me into a specific position, she told me “let them tell you no; apply for any job, within reason, because you don’t want to be the one to tell yourself ‘oh, I’m not qualified or good enough for that position’ — let them tell you that.”

Don’t wait for someone to tell you that you can or that you’re qualified for a specific job posting. Take your own initiative and get out of your own way! Tell yourself YOU CAN.

Don’t wait for someone else to give you your shot. Apply. Take your shot. Don’t stand in your own way; let them tell you no.
