Snails

We could put snails on you Ruth said. Okay. I felt the rhythmic waves of muscular contraction from the snail moving up my arm. The snails felt gross against my arms and legs, but I was willing to do it if they wanted me to. Ruth and Hannah were our neighbors from down the block. I loved talking to them, playing with them, and eating pizza on their couch while I waited for my dad to come home from work.

After a few years, I didn’t see them anymore. I would sit in my room on the white and brown shag carpet and play with my dolls while my mom sat in the living room paying bills or playing solitaire on her desktop. I got used to being alone at home and I didn’t really like it. Around this time I desperately wanted a brother or sister just to cure my boredom. You can only play with barbies and baby dolls alone for so long before you run out of scenarios to run through. At the time, I didn’t understand why Ruth and Hannah didn’t want to hang out and play with me anymore. While they had their high school friends over, I was long forgotten playing with Polly pockets in my backyard by myself.
