A Christmas Card for You
My mom passed away October 2013, and it hasn’t been the same. I wrote this poem for her.
I saw a Christmas card for you
As I walked the store,
Just passing through
.
I thumbed through the ones addressed “to Mom”
One even contained a meaningful Psalm
.
I picked up one and read another
But as I did my heart grew number
For as the time for cheer draws near
The occasion posits a sign every year
.
That you are asleep and briefly omitted
From this season of spirit
You are temporarily lifted
.
For now my heart remains broken
The only item I can present as token
.
For earthly things you could not take with you
Only the divine spark that the Spirit withdrew
.
I await the day when I can rejoice
The tender return of your voice
.
