Why Your Vote Is So Important

Oliver Cromwell was the Lord Protector of England for a few short years in the 1650’s while the nation was without a king. And while not a king, Cromwell wanted his children to succeed him to rule England.

Donald Trump, while not a king, has inferred that his children should succeed him as President of the United States.

In the first year of his Administration there were confirmed reports of Ivanka and Donald Jr. arguing over who should get to be President next.

The obvious answer is me, but I refuse to live anywhere it snows.

We’re often told that our right to vote is sacred and hard won by the blood of American Patriots. You might be surprised to learn that the concept of a free and fair election has it’s roots as far back as the 14th Century in England. With the creation of the House of Commons, representatives were elected mostly by property owners, but in densely populated areas every male head of household could vote.

We’d have to wait another six hundred years for Suffragettes earning women the right to vote.

VOTER FRAUD IS NOT A THING

At least, not until this year. And in every case where it was discovered, it was a Republican(s) perpetrating the crime.

I knew a man who worked in the Office of the Governor of the State of California in the department that oversaw election enforcement. We were discussing voter fraud and he explained that the secret about voter fraud is that there isn’t any.

In his decades of work in the field he had encountered only five cases of voter fraud. In a state with a population of over forty million people.

I was stunned.

“Think about it,” he said. “there’s no upside and an enormous downside. As crimes go, where’s the payoff? How many times can you vote in a day? Five? Ten? So you add nine extra votes to the tally. That won’t make any difference in a vote count of tens of millions. And if you get caught? You go to prison. For years. And pay fines of thousands of dollars. It’s not like robbing a bank. There’s no profit to it even if you are successful.”

The same is true today with mail-in voting. The people running elections are not stupid. Mail-in ballots are compared to the voter rolls.

Ballots submitted by names not registered to vote aren’t counted.
