My summer 2019 in India as a global volunteer

What an international volunteering program looks like

I have always aspired to be a feminist for a good cause, an advocate for equality, an influencer for people around me, and a world citizen who connects different cultures. Having learned about the gender inequality issues in India in the past years, the project “War Against Rape” organized by AIESEC in Jaipur, India, seemed to be the perfect endeavor. I felt ready to do something big and bold this summer, as it is the transitional time between my college and graduate school during which I have sufficient time and energy to take on a passion project.

India is a mysterious place for me. The country has the origin of one of the most ancient and fascinating civilizations, the home to the complex Hindu and Buddhist thoughts, while in the meantime the scary place in people’s perception when it comes to living conditions, especially for women. Most people around me had never been to India and would use words like “poor”, “dirty”, “underdeveloped”, and “unsafe” to describe the country. I, despite the efforts to remind myself to remain unbiased to things I have not seen with my own eyes, was still inevitably affected by these widely accepted negative perceptions. Therefore, I had my worries and doubts about the extreme weather, level of hygiene, and safety. Without much concrete information about how the accommodation is like and who the other participants…
