Yankees Lose Sixth Consecutive Series for First Time Since 1995

Team had lost 14 of past 17 games

The New York Yankees lost 5–2 on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The offense was yet again a letdown.

Gerrit Cole was strong except for the fifth inning, where he unraveled, giving up four runs.

The bullpen gave up one run as Albert Abreu struggled again.

Manager Aaron Boone was fired up in his postgame interview.

“We got to play better, period,” Boone said.

“And the great thing is, it’s right in front of us.”

The Yankees scored first on Estevan Florial’s RBI single.

Cole was throwing a no-hitter up until the dreadful fifth inning.

He gave up four runs, thanks to Jackie Bradley, Jr’s and Alejandro Kirk’s two-run RBI doubles.

Cole was done after six innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out five.

Gleyber Torres cut the deficit to two with his solo home run in the eighth.

But Matt Chapman took it right back in the ninth with a solo blast of his own off Abreu in his inning of work.

Ron Marinaccio and Scott Effross each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

Cole (9–6) picked up the loss.

They did outhit Toronto 9–7 but were not able to bunch the hits together to drive in runs.

Florial’s RBI hit was his first hit and RBI of the season and was the first time New York scored first in a game in eight days (August 12).

The entire unit needs to step up. On the bright side, Giancarlo Stanton started his rehab assignment and should rejoin the team within the next week or two.

The theme for Cole this year has been one bad inning costing him a great outing.

It happened to him again tonight, and without the run support needed to bail him out, it was bound to be the inning that lost them the game.

The bullpen was solid once again, outside Abreu, who like Aroldis Chapman, had back-to-back rough outings after having good ones prior.

The losing streak has mainly been on the offense, but the pitching does need to clean up the mistakes and try to avoid the big innings.

New York will hope to avoid the sweep while giving the ball to Nestor Cortes (9–4, 2.74 ERA) at 1:35 p.m. EST.

Alek Manoah (12–6, 2.71 ERA) will get the ball for the Blue Jays.

Let’s go Yankees!
