Some advises for a better trekking in Cusco

Who I am?

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Daniel, I’m a Costa Rican guy who enjoys nature, photography and biking too.

I'm far of being a professional but I do trekking quite often and I love it.

These advises are a collection that some friends told me before my trip and others I had learned on the road.

This is not a tourist guide telling how to go to Machu Pichu or something about that, This is a collection of advises from an amateur hiker and hopefully this would help you.

The first thing to consider in Cusco is the altitude, the altitude in Cusco downtown is 3,399 meters if you aren’t used to high attitudes probably you will have altitude sickness probably.

These are some places that I went and their elevation:

Surprisingly, Machu Pichu isn’t high as you might think(Or I at least I thought it in that way).

Let’s say this is my case.
Not this one for sure.

Coca is something that you will see in every corner in Cusco.

But, What is it? It is a leaf that you can consume it in a Tea, candies or you just chew it. It is recommended by locals to consume before, during or after you reach a high place and this helps to deal with the altitude sickness.

Personally, I recommend you to consume the leaf, because It is 100 % natural.

If you really want to reach of these places by your own feet, you should work out, I mean you don't need to be an athlete but a good physical condition come in handy in these places.

I can’t recommend you a list of exercises but I hit the gym often , I do trekking and mountain bike too and these things really help me in Peru. Maybe doing trekking in high places would help.

Also, When I am doing trekking I usually bring a good weight on my bag, not sure If that helps but a least I prepare my shoulders for the worst.

But, If you have any trouble or feel that you are not able to make it, don't put yourself in risk and take your pride down and rent a donkey, you can find them in almost all attractions.

You don't need the most expensive equipment for this and if you want to wear your old jeans is ok, but an appropriate clothing is going to be very useful.

And here come the questions.

Weather seems to be unpredictable in Cusco and This kind of clothing is going to help you.

I recommend you a waterproof one.

Be sure to use them before your trip, your foot need to adapt to the new shoes otherwise your feet will hurt probably.

Some people like using them other not, but from My point of view there are useful specially on descending they make it safer.

Try to bring few things and bring the stuff that you really need for each place and as extra advice, a bag with a camel bag is handy.

I used a 20 liters bag, small but enough for me.

These places are windy because of the altitude so you would need it.

Because some places are cold for your head. :)

Of Course! These places are amazing and you will enjoy taking pictures.

In Plaza de Armas(Cusco main avenue) all those tour agencies besides tours They also offer your clothing and stuff very useful for trekking, also you can get them in Mercado Artesanal and probably in a better price than Plaza de Armas.

Keep in mind all these stuff they sell is made in Peru and Bolivia so, prices are lower than a North Face store for example.

The Mercado Artesanal is nearby to Plaza de Armas and also you can get souvenirs there.

Mercado Artesanal

Try to have a good breakfast before walking you will need energy.

Eating during you are walking is good too, you can try eating energy bars or fruit for example.

To be hydrated is something that human beings should do everyday, but If you don’t drink water often at least try to do it before and during your trip.

Also should know that taking care of water and nature resources is something very important now days.

My advice, If you want to save some money and use less plastic bring your own bottle and buy a big water bottle in any supper market and fill your bottle with the one you just buy and let the big one in your hotel for other trips.

In this section is about some recommendations by myself about each place.

For sure, this is most famous attraction on Cusco, everyone wants a picture on this place.

The altitude is 2,430 m, It not so high(compare to another places) but some people have problems with altitude.

You can go to Machu Pichu in the usual way, taking a train and then taking a bus… but if you’re a little adventurous, you can book the Inca trail

There are two ways of for doing the Incal Trail(or at least these are the options that I’m aware of). One is a walking tour for four days around Mountains that bordered Machu Pichu, you will do camping every day.

The short version takes one day, and you will walk for around 8- 10 hours from the kilometer 104.

If you work out quite often you will not have major problems(I hope so).

In some places you have to climb some Inca stairs(made of stone), so be careful where you put your feet and take care of your knees.

Rainbow mountain without Photoshop filters

This one is very cool and the altitude is 5,200 m, while you are walking on this you could have problems with oxygen in some parts of the road but once you are on the top everything gets normal.

In the worst of the cases, your tour guide(if you rent one) will provide you an oxygen tank or you can get it in Cusco Main Square(Plaza Armas) also you can rent a donkey(they are all around the road).

If you are in a small group, I recommend you to ask to your tour guide to bring you to the red valley… believe me this places is gorgeous and from my point of view It is better than the Rainbow mountain itself and also seems to be a place where tourist don't visit often maybe because they want to walk more :P

This is place is incredibly amazing the altitude is 4200m.

To reach the Lagoon, you have to walk for a while on a stone road and by this same road you have to descend, once on the Lagoon you can enjoy the landscape and it is totally worthy.

On the descending if you don't have a lot of experience be sure of using trekking poles, they come in handy because you can fall out.

Again, donkeys are available if you have any problem.

Ollantaytambo is a village in the Sacred Valley of south Peru, and the main attraction is their Ruins, It might be hard for your kness since you have to walk on stone stands and the altitude is 2,792 m and the descending is by the same path that you climbed.

I hope all these information will help you, South America is amazing you will enjoy it, If you have enough time you should visit Bolivia or Chile They are amazing too.

Be sure to enjoy the Inca Culture, Food, Alpacas and Llamas. PERU and its people is amazing.
