What mattered in Blue Jays Game 42

The Blue Jays haven’t had an uneventful win in ages, and this might’ve been the closest thing.

Although the game was literally devoid of events — the teams combined for three runs on nine hits — that doesn’t mean it was no-stress. Another one-run victory gave the Blue Jays their first series victory against the Yankees, a foe that’s not living up to the name or projections at the moment.

Here’s what mattered on Tuesday:

Jonathan Davis arrives on the scene

Over and over again, it’s been said that Davis is the best defensive outfielder on this roster, but expectations for his bat are non-existent. The 28-year-old’s minor-league track record doesn’t suggest much offensive potential, and he’d hit .185/.264/.259 in 122 MLB plate appearances coming into this one.

Because of his speed and defensive acumen, Davis’s inability to make a consistent impact with the bat is fine in a limited role. When he gives you anything at the plate, that’s gravy. In this case, it was the only offence the club could manage.

Not only did Davis clear the fence, he smacked the ball 411 feet at an impressive 106.8 mph. That’s harder and farther than I would’ve assumed he was capable of hitting a ball. For reference, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who’s in the midst of a fine season, has topped out at 412 feet and 107.2 mph.

One hit shouldn’t change our expectations for Davis, but it was a nice moment for a guy who rarely gets the spotlight.

About at bad as four scoreless innings get

Taijuan Walker’s ERA went from 3.26 to 2.95 on Tuesday, but that’s just about the only positive thing you could say about his night.

Walker gave up five free passes — blowing away his season-high of three — and took 88 pitches to get through four innings. Even though he only allowed two knocks, he was actually hit fairly hard as the Yankees average an exit velocity of 93.2 mph against him.

Walker’s performance didn’t end up costing his team the game, but he did cost his bullpen a couple of innings — and even though that group has a lot of manpower at the moment, it’s still getting worn thin.

The 28-year-old has now given up just two runs in 15.2 innings as a Blue Jay, but that’s not the only measure of success — and he wasn’t successful in this game.

Cavan Biggio is officially scuffling

Because the majority of this lineup is humming along nicely, Biggio’s recent struggles have fallen through the cracks. In his last 11 games he’s slashed .171/.292/.268 and struck out 27.1 percent of the time — a number far more in line with his rookie season than a sophomore campaign where he seems to be taking a step forward in that area.

Now the second baseman/super utility man’s season line of .247/.370/.430 is virtually identical to the .234/.364/.429 he posted last year. Considering a much less forgiving offensive environment in 2020, his wRC+ this season (123) is significantly better than last year’s (114), but this recent stretch has taken the wind out of the idea that he’s experiencing a true breakout, or finding new life in the leadoff spot.

On Tuesday, Biggio saw a tonne of pitches (27), and uncharacteristically swung at more than half of them (14) which resulted in two strikeouts. To be fair, he also had some tough calls go against him.

We’re not at a point where there’s reason to worry about Biggio. He’s perfectly-suited to take team’s first at-bat every night and there’s no reason to move him, especially with the way the team is winning. If the Blue Jays lineup takes a step back, and Biggio is still struggling at the top, making a move could become necessary, but we’re not even close to that yet.
