The Terrible Twenties

Prelude

I am stuck at a point in time where I feel like a plethora of different versions of myself are trapped inside my singular, fragile, imperfect body. There are versions of myself that I aspire to be, versions that I appear to be, versions that I present to the exterior world, and versions that I am afraid to reveal to anyone, including myself.

The amazing, and arguably most frightening, thing about being in your twenties can be likened to this analogy: you’re in a car, one of those old-fashioned manual kinds. The kind that takes a while to start up. The kind that has a rusty rickety radio, through which sounds that stretch back far beyond your young ears play with a warm, familiar crackle. You aren’t sure where you’re supposed to be going, and you struggle to stay on course as you peer through the dust on the windscreen. The route you’re on seems to change, and present new paths upon each turn; some seem newly paved, whereas some seem damaged and worn-down. At times, it may feel as if you are perfectly on track…those are the times during which a dust storm will come hurling at you and knock you off course.

Oh, and all this, while fully knowing you are still yet to get your license.

So here I present to you not just one story, but many. Stories of all my selves and the people we encounter, stories that will make you laugh so hard you’ll clutch your stomach for air, stories that will make you wake up in the middle of the night with cold sweats, stories that breathe life into all those moments we look back on and realise we had taken for granted all along, stories that hurt, and stories that I hope…heal.
