5 Byron Katie Quotes to Nourish Your Soul

Insights into selflessness and the freedom and joy it can bring

A Mind at Home With Itself: How Asking Four Questions Can Free Your Mind, Open Your Heart, and Turn Your World Around is Byron Katie’s commentary on the “Diamond Sutra,” one of the great spiritual texts of all time.

The Diamond Sutra addresses the idea of “no-self,” a fundamental principle in Buddhism. This mind-boggling idea is contrary to the conditioning we receive in the West, which encourages us to solidify the sense of “I” through competition, success, and consumerism.

In the pages of her commentary, Katie makes the unsettling idea of “no-self” a far friendlier concept. She adds her inquiry method, called “The Work,” to help you actualize the experience of living with a less solidified sense of self.

Spiritual teachers have told us from time immemorial that enduring happiness will only be ours if we let go of clinging to thoughts, emotions, and our identity—this solid sense of self.

This might feel foreign or even frightening at first. But in reality, we’re only letting go of a false notion of “self” that’s based only upon concepts.

Wouldn’t that be worthwhile if it brings greater freedom and joy?

Katie led an ordinary life, which included marriage, children, and a career, when she plunged into a ten-year downward spiral. She fell into depression, agoraphobia, self-hatred, and suicidal wishes.

But one day, all of a sudden, she “woke up.”

Her depression and fear had dissolved along with all the thoughts that had tortured her. The four questions that constitute The Work were born in that moment. Henceforth, she felt only joy.

Katie vigorously did The Work herself for the next year. Soon after, she began sharing The Work with others. For the past 30 plus years, she has lived her life in service, devoting herself to helping others end their suffering.

Shall we take a look at selections of the wisdom she shares?
