What does it mean for a film to be timeless?

I struggled to find the right way to start my first post, so I started looking through other posts on Medium and reading film think pieces. After a few minutes of reading of talented writers, I see I am definitely not one of them :(

That’s why the post starts with a video from the legendary film critic Roger Ebert, the way he expresses his love for film is that same way I feel :)

My posts will surely be filling with grammatical errors and contain the vocabulary of a high school sophomore, but that’s fine for me. The purpose of this account isn’t to have groundbreaking insight into films or convince anyone that I should be a film critic. I wanted to challenge myself creatively with my love of film and develop a greater appreciation of the art form.

Now to be clear, I do not have a definite answer to the questions I just wrote. Stephen Spielberg said the audience is the decider of what makes a film timeless. Since he is my favorite director of all time, I’ll go with his answer.

My goal with these Medium posts is to examine films that have been released theatrically or on blu-ray in recent years, and breakdown if they are timeless to me.

I want to reiterate that I’m not saying my opinion is right or better than anyone else, it’s only my personal thoughts.
